Results of SMOV3B

  SMOV3B WFPC2 Lyman-Alpha Throughput Check
  L. Lubin, B. Whitmore, A. M. Koekemoer, I. Heyer

The far-UV throughput of WFPC2 was monitored on March 23, 2002,
for any signs of unexpected throughput degradation following
Servicing Mission 3b. No significant changes were detected.

  http://www.stsci.edu/instruments/wfpc2/Wfpc2_tir/tir0204.html
  SMOV3B WFPC2 Photometry Check
  B. Whitmore and I. Heyer

A check of the photometric throughput of the WFPC2 was
performed March 31, 2002 (program ID: 8953). The standard
star GRW+70d5824 was observed with a selection of filters
and the standard star was centered in each of the four CCDs.
The data indicate that any changes in the photometric
throughputs due to SM3B are less than 1% in most of the
visible wavelength filters, and less than a few percent in
the UV filters. The distribution shows a mean value of 0.34
+/- 0.26 sigma (where sigma is defined separately for each
filter-chip combination) for all the observations,
essentially consistent with an unchanged photometric
throughput. This corresponds to about 0.4% on an absolute
scale. The long-term throughput decline is consistent with
the expected CTE loss. The response of the WFPC2 has
  essentially not changed.

SMOV3B WFPC2 UV Contamination Monitoring and Throughput Check
  A. M. Koekemoer, S. Gonzaga, L. Lubin, B. Whitmore, I. Heyer

The throughput of the WFPC2 cameras in the UV is potentially
susceptible to significant decreases as a result of
contaminants deposited on the cold CCD windows, once the
instrument has been cooled down to -88 C. An important part
of our SMOV3B checkout involved intensive monitoring of this
contamination using the F170W filter, to ensure that the
throughput never dropped below levels that can safely be
removed by the regular decontamination procedures. We report
here the results of these measurements, showing that the
throughput remained at safe levels throughput SMOV3B, and in
addition demonstrating that the decontamination procedures
during SMOV3B returned the throughput to its nominal levels.
We also find that the daily contamination rates have now
  returned to their pre-SMOV3B levels.

  SMOV3B Flat Field Verification
  A. M. Koekemoer and I. Heyer

We compare WFPC2 Earthflats taken before and after the 2002
Servicing Mission 3B. Most of the field-of-view shows no
change (<0.3%) in flat field calibration. The only changes
on large scales are at very low levels (<0.1-0.2%) and are
likely attributable to long-term changes in the camera
  geometry, rather than SM3B.

  SMOV3B Check of the WFPC2 Point-Spread-Function
  V. Kozhurina-Platais, L.M. Lubin, and A.M. Koekemoer

We examine the Point-Spread-Function (PSF) of the WFPC2
after the Servicing Mission 3b using dithered observations
of the rich globular cluster, Omega Cen. Comparisons to
previous measurements of the PSF which were made after the
last two servicing missions (SM2 and SM3a) indicate that
no significant variations in the PSF have occurred. We
also present an analysis of the shape of the PSF as a
function of five positions on the Planetary Camera (PC)
  chip.

Charge Transfer Efficiency for Very Faint Objects and a
Reexamination of the Long-vs-Short Problem for the WFPC2
B. Whitmore and I. Heyer

An analysis of WFPC2 observations of Omega Cen and NGC 2419
leads to the following results.
1. The correction formula developed by Whitmore, Heyer, and
Casertano (1999; hereafter WHC99) does a reasonable job of
correcting for CTE loss down to extremely low count levels
(i.e., so faint you cannot actually see the object but only
know of its existence from longer exposures). There is no
sharp cutoff to the detection threshold for very faint stars.
2. A comparison of the WHC99 formula with the Dolphin (2000b;
hereafter D00) formula shows reasonable agreement for bright
and moderately bright stars, with the D00 formula giving
better results. However, at very faint levels, the D00
formula overestimates, and the WHC99 formula underestimates,
the correction by tens of percent. Our current recommendation
is to use the D00 formula for CTE loss correction.
3. A reexamination of the long-vs-short nonlinearity shows
that the effect is very small (a few percent) or nonexistent
for uncrowded fields, with less than ~ 1000 stars per chip.
However, for crowded fields, with ~ 10,000 stars per chip,
apparent nonlinearities of tens of percent are possible. The
most likely explanation is that this is due to an overestimate
of the sky measurement in the short exposure, which is
probably due to the presence of scattered light around bright
stars and the subsequent improvement in CTE loss in these
regions. No correction formula has been derived in the current
study since the effect is dependent on the analysis parameters
(aperture size) and probably also on the photometry package
(psf-fitting, aperture photometry, ...).
4. Preflashing may be a useful method of reducing the effects
of CTE loss for certain observations (moderately bright
objects on very faint backgrounds), but the effects of added
noise and longer overheads limit its effectiveness.
5. The detection thresholds for typical broad band
observations have been reduced by ~ 0.1 - 0.2 mag in the ~7
years since WFPC2 was launched. For worst-case observations
(F336W) the effect is currently ~ 0.4 magnitudes.

New CTE Formula from Dolphin
L. Lubin

We highlight recent work on the Charge Transfer Efficiency
(CTE) problem for WFPC2 by Andrew Dolphin (NOAO). Current
CTE correction formulae are of a functional form that assumes
the charge loss per pixel is constant as a star is read out.
For a CTE correction that is itself a function of counts,
this assumption is not strictly true. In most cases, however,
the CTE loss is sufficiently small that the error introduced
by assuming a constant CTE loss per pixel is negligible, and,
thus, such a formula provies an adequate approximation.

However, for very faint stars, the CTE loss can exceed half
of the star's initial brightness, thus causing the charge
loss per pixel to change significantly as the star reads out.
The latest correction equations by Dolphin (2002) take into
account the fact that the magnitude loss per pixel is not
constant as the star reads out and, therefore, provide more
accurate corrections for the faintest stars. His updated
formulae were posted on May 31, 2002 and can be found on his
webpage at http://www.noao.edu/staff/dolphin/wfpc2_calib/.

Using this new correction, the overestimation of the Dolphin
(2001) CTE correction reported by Whitmore and Heyer (2002;
WFPC2 ISR 02-03) is eliminated to within the uncertainty of
their measurement. Therefore, our current recommendation is
to use the Dolphin (2002) formula for the CTE loss correction.

Anomalous PHOTFLAM Value for F656N Filter
L. Lubin

Based on a Help Desk call, we have discovered that the value
listed in the PHOTFLAM keyword in the image headers of data
taken in the F656N filter is incorrect. The discrepancy of
approximately 4% was due to a coarse wavelength grid being
used to compute the keyword value. We note that the values
of PHOTFLAM given in the HST Data Handbook for WFPC2 (V4.0)
or derived from computing it directly via SYNPHOT are and
have always been correct. In addition, no inconsistencies
have been detected with the PHOTFLAM value given in the
image headers for the other narrow band filters.

It is not known how long this problem has existed; however,
as of May 2002, this error has been corrected in the
On-The-Fly Reprocessing (OTFR) system. Therefore, all data
retrieved from the archive after May 2002 will have the
correct PHOTFLAM value for the F656N filter.
