Hi Adam and everybody over there,
We have completed our screening stage over here (removing
candidates near edges, those with "holes" in the old image, etc.) and we
have cut out more good low redshift candidates that are not interesting
as main targets for this search (these include supernovae that were on
your list or our list but not both). In the end we have two candidates
for z>1.2 that we consider good: acs04-076/Zamorano (photo-z = 1.61) and
acs04-181 (photo-z = 1.52). At this stage our plan is to try to
observe 076/Zamorano as our first choice if we can get the guide stars
for the observations we want, and use 181 as a back-up.
Since you may also want to consider 181, it's probably worth
looking for it in your subtractions. (We have put some additional
images (and subtraction image) on the
http://panisse.lbl.gov/hstsearch04/ web page to help recognize
181.) We have checked this candidate's color and magnitudes (ACS and
recent Subaru) and they are all consistant with its host photo-z. Its
signal is a rather large increase about a pixel away from the center of
its host (also seen in the I band subtraction), and all of the
neighboring galaxies subtract cleanly showing no residual. There is
no evidence for any fluctuations at this location in the series of
images from 2003.
We'll be reachable by email or phone (office number or cell
phone) over the next hour until its time for our conference call, if you
have any early questions. Let's use the 510-486-7555 number again for
the conference call. Talk to you soon. --Saul
