2002A run

Dear all,
I have started to assemble a web-page with the kind of plots and
information that we
usually need to make decissions regarding what candidates to follow-up.
Please, check-out
http://www.physto.se/~snova/private/2002Arun/2002Arun.html
(scpmem/hizsn) and
let me know what other links/plots/etc you want to see there.

There are a number of simulation plots showing the expected number of
SNe as
a function of redshift bin, (RIJ)-lightcurves, detection magnitudes vs
z, epoch at
detection, a.s.o.

There is also a spectroscopy section with the common knowledge about Ia
spectra
(line positions, template temporal evolution, etc)

Prompted by Greg & Saul, I also had a *first quick look* at the
following issue. There is
a fair chance that we may find many more candidates than what we need to
send
to HST in april (1 @ z~1.2 + 2 @ z~0.85). Thus the question is: for how
many more
candidates could we get decent lightcurves from CFHT + 7 hs of FORS2
(run F)?

We expect that ~50% of the candidates (5-15) to have z<0.8. If you look
in the
above mentioned webpage under the link "CFHT lightcurves" you'll notice
that
up to z=0.8, CFHT should be able to produce very decent I-band
lightcurves
for the april discoveries. Here I am assuming that we can have a S/N=10
up to
I=24.5 . If we through in the FORS2 imaging time (7 hs) we
could do up to ~3 additional candidates in the redshift range z=0.8-0-9.
I am assuming
1 LC point for each down to 25.5 in I.
All in all, it seems to me that we have a good shot at
being able to follow ALL the april CFHT discoveries with good
lightcurves.
The problem is rather the Keck and VLT spectroscopy time are too
early w.r.t the search nights. The weather and subtractions have to work

the first two nights!

There is another issue: we have asked for ISAAC time to get 1 J-band
point
at max for a z=0.5 guy. For this to make sense we also must ensure that
we
have both good R and I-band lightcurves for that guy.

Grateful for comments and suggestions,
             Ariel
