Strong Lines in type1a supernova near maximum light ---------- ------------------------------------------ The following list gives some of the important lines in type1a supenova spectra. The values in the list are: lambda = line rest-wavelength, gf = oscillator strength, E_lower = excitation energy. The strength of each line is proportional to its oscillator strength: gf, a number that is determined by the atomic physics of the transition. E_lower denotes the energy needed to excite the atom into the lower level of the transition. If the atmosphere is in thermodynamic equillibrium (often not too bad a guess), then the strength of the line is porportional to exp(-E_lower/kT) where k=boltzman constant and T is the temperature of the atmosphere. Thus the relative strength of the lines can be gauged as: Line strength ~gf*exp(-E_lower/kT) Brackets (] and }) denote lines that are close enough together that they will blend into a single feature. A good single wavelength to use for these blends is to take the mean wavelength of all contributing lines, weighted by their gf values. Stars (*) denote lines (or blends of lines) that form clear, distinct spectral features in the spectrum.
