ESO Jan97 spectra reduced by Chris Lidman. Notes put together by IMH from Chris' e-mail & my own comments. Chris' e-mail: -------------------------------------------------------------------- I've finished my first attempt at using IRAF to reduce the data. In general the results I get are very similar to the reuduction done with MIDAS at the telescope. If anything MIDAS reductions are of better signal to noise. This may be because optimal extraction was used in the MIDAS reductions, while it was not used in the IRAF routine. I'll leave the MIDAS and IRAF reductions in the directory "pub/clidman/distSN" of the anonymous ftp site "sc6.sc.eso.org". MIDAS reduced files start with an "f". There is one major difference. The MIDAS and IRAF reduced data are a factor of 10 different. I've checked the IRAF reduction, and it's OK, so I expect that the error was in the MIDAS reduction. Anyway, here are the results I derive from the spectra. Object Total Exposure z(error) Comments ------------------------------------------------------------------------ SN970 3600 0.172(1) SN + Gal(H-alpha,[SII], OIII, H-beta?) SN971 5400 0.526(1) Gal(H, K, G) - Eliptical, SN? SN976 8100 0.57(1) SN only SN9742 1800 0.43(1) SN only SN9710 1800 0.180(1) SN(Old)+ Gal(H-alpha,S[II]?,OIII?) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ If you want one or more of these for the paper, let me know, and I'll try to do a really good job at the extraction. Cheers, Chris. -------------------------------------------------------------- ************************************************************** Isobel's comments: Fits Spectra copied to ihook@sci5.hq.eso.org:iraf/eso_jan97/. -------------------------------------------------------------- SN970 IRAF file: sn970opt2.imh wrote as ascii >> sn970opt2.asc Agree with z from Chris. -------------------------------------------------------------- SN971 IRAF file: sn971opt.imh wrote as ascii >> sn971opt.asc Agree with z from Chris. Check this one. Looks as though main peak is eaten away, but no galaxy lines present ? Possibly half of H\&K, and OII, Hb @z=0.442 ? -------------------------------------------------------------- SN9710 IRAF file sn9710opt.imh wrote as ascii sn9710opt.asc agree with z from Chris.
