CCI INTERNATIONAL TIME (2004) CALL FOR PROPOSALS
The International Scientific Committee (CCI) of the Roque de los Muchachos
(ORM) and Teide (OT) observatories invites applications for International
Time Programmes (ITP) on telescopes installed at these Observatories. The
ITP offers up to 5% of the observing time, evenly spread throughout the year
and the lunar cycle, at the telescopes listed below. An ITP proposal can
request observing time over a period of up to two subsequent years. Full
details of the scheme for night-time telescopes can be found at
http://www.iac.es/gabinete/cci/tinoc1.htm
Proposals are considered on an annual cycle and the closing date for
submission of proposals to the 2004 ITP is Friday 6th February, for projects
which may start during the fall of the same year.
Proposers must bear in mind that specific instrumentation may not be
available at all times and that the CCI does not schedule the observing time
as this is done by the corresponding technical committees of each telescope
or group of telescopes.
The aim of the ITP is to encourage large-scale international scientific
projects of the highest quality, which cannot easily be accommodated within
other time allocation schemes. Proposals should be international in their
range of participants and are expected to involve astronomers from at least
two of the European countries that have signed the Agreements for
Cooperation in Astrophysics. They can include astronomers from scientific
institutions in any of the countries associated with the EC's Framework
Programmes and may entitle them to reimbursement of travel and accommodation
costs related to their participation in the observing programme. Moreover,
such proposals can include astronomers from scientific institutions from any
other country in the world, but this does not entail the right to
reimbursement of their expenses.
The observing programmes should concentrate on a single large-scale
astronomical investigation. Proposals that would benefit from the use of
more than one facility, and which would be unlikely to obtain the necessary
observing time through the usual time allocation panels because of the scale
of the project, or because of the difficulty to coordinate several
telescopes, are especially encouraged. However, collaborative international
projects that require the use of a single facility are also welcome.
Scientific excellence is a prime consideration. Each proposal will be
assessed scientifically by the CCI, which reserves the right not to make an
award on one or more telescopes if the quality of the proposals is not
adequate to justify their use.
The CCI may award time to one or more projects. Once a project is selected,
and with the agreement of the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias, any
Spanish institution shall have the right to join the programme if it wishes.
Annual brief progress reports will be required by the CCI from successful
applicants. On completion of the programme, and not later than two years
after the final period of observing time, a full report should be submitted
to the CCI for publication in its Annual Report.

Opportunities/Questionnaire for Narrow Band Imaging on the INT
As of semester 2003B the INT is being operated as a single instrument
telescope, the instrument being the Wide Field Camera (WFC). The
community is reminded that the available filters for the WFC comprise
a good range of narrow band filters suitable for exploitation of
bright time. The current list includes the following ING owned
filters (filter central_wavelength/bandpass);
OII 3737/100
HeII 4686/100
OIII 5008/100
Halpha 6568/95
SII 6725/80
plus the following privately owned filters which are also available to the
ING community (filter central_wavelength/bandpass owner/email);
Halpha redshifted 9190/50 Alfonso Aragon Salamanca
(Alfonso.Aragon@nottingham.ac.uk)
Halpha redshifted 8160/50 Alfonso Aragon Salamanca
(Alfonso.Aragon@nottingham.ac.uk)
OIII redshifted 5027/60 Nial Tanvir
(nrt@star.herts.ac.uk)
For these privately owned filters prospective applicants should first contact
the appropriate owner.
In addition the ING is seeking to expand the choice of available filters
and is actively pursuing the purchase of the following filters in
collaboration with John Beckman at the IAC;
Hbeta broad 4861/170
Hbeta narrow 4861/30
As part of this on-going process we are anxious to hear from individuals
who have a need for filters not listed above. Please send any suggestions
for additional filters to
Romano Corradi (INT Telescope Manager) rcorradi@ing.iac.es
Robert Greimel (WFC Instrument Specialist) greimel@ing.iac.es
Suggestions may be sent at any time but should include a brief statement
of scientific interest plus a short technical description of the
filters required (minimally central_wavelength and bandpass).
