    POSSIBLE NOVA IN SAGITTARIUS
         W. Liller, Vina del Mar, Chile, reports his discovery of a
possible nova (mag approximately 8.5) on three Technical Pan films
taken with an 80-mm f/1.4 camera lens (+ orange filter) on Sept.
15.110-15.124 UT. A CCD image by Liller taken on Sept. 16.007
yields broadband-V mag 8.13 and the following position: R.A. =
    18h02m22s.07 +/- 0s.15, Decl. = -25o20'30".4 +/- 1".5 (equinox
2000.0); nothing appears at this location to mag 11.5 on two
photographs taken on Sept. 11.12. Visual magnitude estimates (some
forwarded by T. Kato, University of Kyoto, and E. Waagen, AAVSO):
    Sept. 16.082, 8.0 (B. King, Duluth, MN); 16.177, 8.1 (C. Puig,
Santa Clara, CA); 16.303, 8.0 (J. Bedient, Honolulu, HI); 16.391,
    7.9 (M. Linnolt, Honolulu, HI).

    SUPERNOVAE 2002fc, 2002fd, 2002fe, 2002ff, 2002fg, 2002fh
         N. Yasuda, National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, on
behalf of the Supernova Cosmology Project (cf. IAUC 7763 and 7764,
plus V. Prasad, G. Sainton, E. Smith, and A. Spadafora) and the
Subaru high-redshift supernova search group (M. Doi, K. Nariai, M.
    Watanabe, Y. Urata, Y. Komiyama, N. Kashikawa, T. Yamada, M.
Ouchi, T. Murayama, K. Shimasaku, H. Furusawa), reports the
discovery of six supernovae found with the Subaru telescope (+
prime-focus Suprime-Cam). Nothing was visible at the respective
positions to limiting magnitude i' about 26.0 on images taken on
    Apr. 9 (SN 2002fh), 12 (SN 2002fg), and Mar. 19 (the rest).

The supernova spectra were obtained at the Very Large Telescope on
Apr. 11 and June 5; at the Gemini telescope on Apr. 16, May 11, and
June 5; and at the Subaru telescope on Apr. 16. The redshifts were
determined from host-galaxy emission and absorption lines, and all
the supernovae were found to be within 2" of their host-galaxies'
centers. Photometry was also obtained with the Hubble Space
    Telescope during Apr. 23-July 3 for SNe 2002fc, 2002fe, 2002ff, and
    2002fg.

    SUPERNOVAE 2002fl, 2002fm, 2002fn, 2002fo, 2002fp, 2002fq, 2002fr
Further to IAUC 7971, J. Raux, Laboratoire de Physique
Nucleaire et de Hautes Energies, University of Paris VI, reports
the discovery of seven apparent supernovae by the Supernova
Cosmology Project. The supernovae were found with the Canada-
France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) during a 'rolling search' spanning
Mar. 16-May 20, with reference images having been obtained at CFHT
    during Mar.-Apr. 2001 (limiting mag 25.6, S/N = 5). Each field was
observed approximately every third night (except for a few weather
gaps), making it possible to construct lightcurves with at least
seven nights' data for each supernova. Spectral types and
redshifts (given to 0.001 for host-galaxy redshifts, to 0.01 for
supernovae redshifts) were obtained using the following telescopes
(and instruments) listed: Keck (+ ESI), 2002fl; Very Large
    Telescope (VLT) UT1 Antu (+ FORS1), 2002fp; VLT UT2 Kuyen (+
    FORS2), 2002fm and 2002fr; Gemini (+ GMOS), 2002fn. Objects
without spectroscopy were identified as supernovae using their
lightcurves (cf. Dahlen and Goobar 2002, PASP 114, 284); these
lightcurves exhibited clear brightening over about 2 weeks for each
object, and each showed a 'kink' in the fading portion of the curve
that is characteristic of type-Ia supernovae in the I band. Some
two dozen active galactic nuclei were also observed in these same
fields, but they were all within 0".01 of their galaxy cores, and
they exhibited sudden brightening/fading in their lightcurves. SN
2002fl was 4".0 from its galaxy's core, and SN 2002fo was 3".4 from
the center of its apparent host galaxy. SN 2002fn was only 0".01
from its galaxy's center. The other supernovae were in the range
0".3-0".6 from their host galaxies' centers.

Further to IAUC} 7977, on behalf of the Supernova Cosmology
Project, R. Knop, Vanderbilt University, reports the discovery of
five supernovae at the Cerro Tololo 4-m telescope (+ Mosaic camera)
during May 6-8, via subtraction of reference images taken Apr.
    15-17 (when the 3-sigma limit on each magnitude was R = 24.0,
except limiting mag I = 24.6 for 2002gi). Spectroscopy and
redshifts (given to 0.001 for host galaxies, to 0.01 for
supernovae) were obtained during May 8-15 with Gemini North (+
GMOS) on Mauna Kea (2002gm) and with the Very Large Telescope (+
FORS1, FORS2) at Paranal (remaining objects). Photometry of 2002gi
was obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope (+ ACS); the other
supernovae were followed in R and I bands with the WIYN 3.5-m
telescope at Kitt Peak and the 3.5-m Telescopio Nazionale Galileo
and 4.2-m William Herschel Telescope at La Palma. Each supernova
is within 1" of its host galaxy's center, except for 2002gj (1".5
    distant).

    SAX J1808.4-3658
         C. B. Markwardt, University of Maryland and Goddard Space
Flight Center; J. M. Miller, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for
Astrophysics; and R. Wijnands, University of St. Andrews, report a
new outburst of the millisecond accreting pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658
(cf. IAUC} 7369). In RXTE PCA scans of the Galactic center on Oct.
13.279 UT, an x-ray source whose position is consistent with SAX
J1808.4-3658 was detected with a flux of 65 mCrab (2-10 keV). On
Oct. 9.5, the PCA flux was < 0.5 mCrab. Two minutes of pointed
data detected x-ray pulsations at the frequency 400.953 +/- 0.008
Hz (barycentered). This frequency is consistent with the known
pulsar spin frequency and orbital Doppler modulation. The RXTE ASM
instrument detected the source on Oct. 14.30 and 14.37 at fluxes of
105 and 76 mCrab, respectively. In its 1998 outburst, the source
also exhibited fast radio and optical transients, so
    multiwavelength observing is encouraged.
